AP Calculus

AB and BC

← All subjects

Calculus AB, and the extra BC topics, taught so your child can explain each step, not just reach the answer.

How the exam runs

AB and BC run the same way: multiple choice in two parts, then free response in two parts. Two parts need a graphing calculator, and two allow none.

  • BC covers all of AB plus two more units. BC students also get an AB subscore, from the AB-topic questions that make up about 60% of the exam.
  • New for May 2027: multiple choice has 42 questions, down from 45, and the exam is 3 hours 10 minutes.

What’s on it

Eight units for AB. BC weighs them less and adds parametric, polar and vector functions, and infinite series. The shares are of the multiple-choice section.

How it’s taken
At school, in the Bluebook app, with free-response answers written in a paper booklet.
Calculator
Only in the calculator parts: the Desmos graphing calculator in Bluebook, or up to two approved graphing calculators.
AB or BC
A student takes one or the other in a given year, not both.

From the College Board’s published exam details, checked November 2026.
